This tool is a good utility to have on your home network and on your home PC. So as everybody’s working at home and, uh, kids and multiple people, um, in your house, but not only that, but also in your neighborhoods have these powerful routers. You can pick up wireless networks across your neighborhood. You can see your networks for your neighbors, your, um, houses, a couple of houses down, sometimes even farther than that. And over time, you might have times in your day that you’ll have network issues or for whatever reason, you’ve got a, maybe a gigabit pipe and you’ve got a, you’ve got a, a gig Browder, but then the router of the wifi is still slow and chocolates you’re, you’re dropping and, and it’s, it causes problems. So that may not necessarily be the power of your network, power of your, um, ISP bandwidth into your home, but it might be interference or something going on with the radio frequencies of the wifi and everyone else talking about it.

So one of the things that you can do is get a wifi scanner. And this episode is about a one that I had found it’s free and it’s one of the best ones best, fully featured free ones that I found by lizard systems called just called wifi scanner. Download will be in the show notes, download, you’ll have to register to get a free, um, free key for personal use. Just go get, you’ll get an email with the key and, and put it in there and registered, but words way, how you can use this. Why it’s important is that it’s amazing that when you run the wifi scanner on a PC or laptop, you can move around, but you’ll be able to see everything that your wifi antenna, Cesar net card sees. And what you can do with that is that when you look at the lines, I’m not getting into the real technical details, but you’ll understand it.

Each there’ll be a little graph on the bottom and each network that it detects will be given a line. Now, if those lines intersect or cross over somebody else, that means that the frequency of the strength and the channel are interfering. But not only that, you have to also take into account, especially if you’re still using 2.4 gigahertz network. That’s the same frequency as like your cordless phones and other types of, of, of wireless devices, not necessarily IOT devices, but wireless devices, Carlos phones are the big ones. Um, 5g, if you can, if your router supports 5g bandwidth, that’s the one that you want to go to. But even still, um, some of the default settings are the same on all the routers and people don’t change the channels. So when you look at the charts, what you can do is and go, Oh, my network is, is overlapping three others.

So you can go into your router configurations and in order to change and tweak your radio frequencies to get kind of get out of that out of the mess, in a way into your own to potentially reduce the interference is changed. The, that you’re broadcasting on and you go into, and it’s going to vary from router to router. But most of them, when you go into your wifi settings, you will see, do you want to do five gigahertz or two, 2.4 gigahertz? And then you’ll see in their channel. And for 2.4 gigahertz, you’ll have maybe a dozen think it’s one through 11 or zero through 11 options on 5g. You’ll have significantly more options because it’s a different, completely different bandwidth in different options with the radio frequencies. But you’ll want to change that because if you think about it, a lot of people you’ve probably never changed the channels of your router.

And so when these, these routers ship by default, they’re all set to, for example, channel one 49 as an example. And so if everyone else doesn’t change them, everyone else at home is broadcasting on the exact same frequency and channel. So in order for you to break away, to hopefully clear up the interference, if you’re having these types of situations and it’s a good at practice, do it anyway, it’s changed the channel and then look at the scanner and see your bandwidth and your wireless detection change and break away from the others. And that’s really the best way to use this. Also just kind of gives you an idea of what else is out there. What else is being seen? What else is this tool picking up that potential you’re not seeing in your network connectivity through windows or through your operating system. And it has a plethora of other options that you can go down to it.

It can scan, um, eight Oh two, 1180 all the way up to AC, which is the most common and current, um, um, wifi protocols. You can look for different security channels. You can look for bands, looking for channel with et cetera, et cetera. Once you get in there, it’s been, it’s very easy to use. So it’s free it’s by lizard systems, just simply called wifi scanner tools, tips, and tricks. Um, I use it quite a bit, um, trying to, to debug as well. It also helps when you’re moving around the house to detect the strength of the wifi. It’s a lot easier to see the strength as you move from right next to the router versus to the, uh, you know, upper floor corner of the house, or even out in the yard. You can, if you have it on a laptop, you can move around and see how truly strong your signal goes.

Um, if you’re out mowing the lawn or out playing in the yard, or, or why you can’t get it in the, in the upper bedroom, you know, that will help and help identify, maybe move the route around that. That helps with that too. So wifi scanner, it’s a good utility to have. Um, if you’re running into goofy wifi, you should be having a tool like this. This will help you. And if you just want to learn about how really everything that’s out there, all the, uh, all the wireless broadcasting that’s out there, this will help detect it and see what else is around there. It’ll help you tweak and tune it and optimize it for this time because your home network, you’re relying on it every single day. So as everyone else, and it’s best to make it run as best you can, this tool will help you do it.
